FOSTERING RACING'S FUTURE
Challenged with creating housing for 4,000 students at the Technical University of Munich in Garching, my design partner and I were dedicated to offering a variety housing types and making this new community a node of interest for the city of Garching, Germany.
The first phase of the design process was dedicated to developing an urban plan to allow a smooth transition from the existing campus to the new community. Studying the site at this scale included determining the proper scale and number of buildings to accommodate the students within this growing city.
During the second phase, I drafted a range of floor plans to allow students, professors and young professionals to live in the same community while having contrasting spaces to fit their lifestyles. This variety was also necessary due to the university's diverse range of cultures and socioeconomic levels.
For the final phase, there was a need to create a node of activity within this new community. As the leading sport in Germany, Formula 1 not only captivates the masses, but also inspires young engineers. The course winds through the site connecting adjacent corners of the community while undulating above and below ground.
Realizing that sound would be an overbearing issue with this sport, we chose to proceed with Formula Electric racing instead. Featuring this level of racing within an engineering university will encourage the creation of programs to allow students to collaborate with the best automotive engineers in the world and become leaders in their own careers.
