ANCIENT CITY, MODERN GEM
While discovering the eternal city of Rome, our studio was tasked with designing an Architecture Academy in the neighborhood adjacent to the iconic Colosseum.
In my analysis, the ancient fragmentation of Rome's urban plan was perceived as a strong point of influence and inspiration. In an effort to provide a similar influence on the site, the characteristic of fragmentation was applied to the academy. Pedestrian paths were traced across the site to define the academy's form.
The concept is finally expressed on the facade in order to frame abstract views of Rome and establish the academy as an icon among monuments. Although fragmentation was a founding principal of this project, it was also important to lift the building above the existing park in order to preserve the public space below and the pedestrian paths defined by the surrounding community.
